Review: Yakun Kaya Steamed Bun Set at Various Outlets

Posted by Gwendolyn at 5:45 PM 0 comments

Yakun Kaya Steamed Bun

Being a loyal fan of Yakun, i always stick to my usual steam bun set with Teh C Kosong. I have tried their Kaya Steamed Bun set at various outlets across Singapore. I realised that there are more outlets at the West side compared to East, and the verdict is... their quality of food is better at the West. Maybe i'm biased cos i'm a Westie. Hahaha...

Tea wise... taste about the same across outlets.... but it is the bread and eggs that are different, in terms of quality. There is an outlet (which i will not name) that serves me broken egg yolks. What kind of standard is this? :(

However, there are outlets that do their QCs really well - too hard or broken egg yolks are discarded.

You may use food wastage as a point to argue... but well... without appetizing food, i will not patron that store.

These are the outlets i have always been to, as i always pass by there/ stay near there:
  • Bedok Mall
  • Paya Lebar Square
  • Tampines (Century Square)
  • Pasiris (White Sands)
  • Jurong East (Jcube)
  • Jurong East (IMM)
  • Jurong East (Ng Teng Fong Hospital) (They serve wholemeal bun!)

Chewy hot wholemeal bun!

Lovely looking wholemeal bun
My favourite set at NTF Hospital

Set at White Sands Family Cafe
My favourite outlet would be at NTF, as they serve wholemeal bread and that it is less crowded during evening, and well... i have my nice-looking appetizing eggs too. So which outlet do you always patron?

Review: DayPlus Breads

Posted by Gwendolyn at 6:02 PM 0 comments

(NOT SPONSORED)

I love DayPlus breads! Please sponsor me!!! Hahahaha... i'm kidding.

Having to try almost all the flavours, i will be listing out the top flavours which i love.

DayPlus breads are soft and whenever i squeeze it, the bread will still bounce back to its original shape. Hahaha...

I will especially buy a lot when there is promotion at $1/each, where it is usually available at supermarkets like NTUC/ Giant and convenience stores like 7-Eleven, and even petrol station like SPC. So keep a lookout! :)

Personally, i find it some of their breads are rather too sweet and are not recommended to consume it everyday. Very sinful, but i will still gobble it... hehehe. Just kidding, i don't gobble... i enjoy it by tearing it layer by layer (just like 9-layer kueh) and savour it with my tea.

My top favourite flavours are as follow:
1. Blueberry
2. Chocolate Orange (Seasonal) (only available at 7-Eleven)
3. Coffee (only available at 7-Eleven)
4. Double Chocolate
5. Cheese
6. Pumpkin
7. Hokkaido Cream (too sweet for my taste)
8. Melon (too sweet for my taste)
9. Custard Cream (too sweet for my taste)

My No. 1 Favourite
Like Cheese Cake

I'm so greedy...

Coffee Interior
Pumpkin Interior

Special Seasonal! Must GRAB!
Orange Chocolate Interior... YUMMILICIOUS!

Greedy mode on again...

Choco licious!
Hokkaido Raisin Healthier?

Hmm...
Too sweet but is nice!

So what are your top 3 favourite flavours?

Braised Peanuts using Slow Cooker

Posted by Gwendolyn at 7:28 PM 0 comments

Braised Peanuts

As my family love to eat the braised peanuts served at a typical Chinese restaurant, i have tried several recipes to make it at home, especially when my family can eat it as snacks when they are hungry.

After making these braised peanuts for some time, i have came up with my own recipes, with just a few ingredients...

Ingredients
1. 100g peanuts (please soaked overnight before use) [for cup measurement: 1 + 1/4 cup]
2. 1 cup of water
3. Few slices of ginger
4. 2 cloves of garlic
5. 1 small cinnamon bark
6. 1 star anise
7. 2 cloves
8. 1 tablespoon of light soya sauce
9. 1/4 teaspoon salt

Feel free to add a little oyster sauce/ dark soya sauce/ sugar for greater taste.

About 1 + 1/4 cup of peanuts
Soaked Overnight Peanuts
Ingredients

Steps
Add ingredient 1 - 9 to a small slow cooker and braised it at high heat for about 8 hours.

After 8 hours of braising at high heat...

Try it and let me know how it goes... :)

Bentong, Pahang, Malaysia (2 Days, 1 Night)

Bentong, Pahang, Malaysia

9 February 2020

The whole journey from Singapore to Bentong was about 5 to 6 hours of driving by car. By the time we reached there, it was about 5.30pm. There is not many hotels around as Bentong is not a big town.

As we didn't booked our accommodation in advance, we have searched on the spot, and reviews from Google recommended Golden Peak Inn (GPI) Hotel. Although it is just a 2-star hotel, as it is newly opened for about 1+ years, their rooms are clean and the price is definitely affordable.

Complementary meal vouchers at I Love Yoo! are included too.

As we wanted to try the local specialty food, we forgo the meal vouchers.

For dinner, we had their local delicacies - fresh water fish.

One of the dishes that i found it interesting was 田七叶. Texture was like seaweed.

After dinner, as it was drizzling, we did not manage to walk around the town. We headed back to the hotel and rest early. However, i have managed to take some photos.

Good night everyone!

10 February 2020
Went out for breakfast around 9am.

As Bentong is famous for their soy products, we tried their Yong Tau Fu.

After breakfast, we walked around the town - visited morning market and local houses. As it was Monday, everywhere was really quiet.

Definitely, Bentong is famous for their Mao Shan Wang durians and gingers. We definitely bought gingers back home as souvenirs and had durians there. Sadly, there aren't many available as the durians season is coming to an end.

As we interacted with the locals, we realised that the durians and gingers are actually from Bukit Tinggi, or Raub, and are sold at bigger town like Bentong.

Local Breakfast - Steamed Bread, Half-Boiled Eggs, Kopi

After the walk, we had some more food - bread, and tauhway with ginger syrup. Yummilicious.

Afterwhich, we went back to our hotel and check out for home.

Cranberry Orange Muffins

Posted by Gwendolyn at 5:32 AM 0 comments
It was such a long time since i have post.

This post was dedicated to Christmas in 2014.

I have decided to try and bake Orange Cranberry Muffins instead of the usual Chocolate Chips as i feel that Christmas should not be BROWN. It should be BRIGHT ORANGE! :]

Since I hardly bake, my final product may not be at the top-notch. Also, i can't determine whether if i have failed in baking for this attempt. Let's just say baking is just my hobby and i'm not a professional baker.

Anyway, these are the final products. It's moist and chewy. Ittadakimasu~
